Subject: [Dbworld] Elsevier handling of plagiarism case

On the 16th of February 2008, I sent an email to the Editorial board of Elseviers Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics. The email, with the subject heading “Dear Editors, I would like to ask you to investigate a paper which appears in your journal for plagiarism” pointed out that paper [a] was plagiarized.

The Editorial board immediately did.. ..nothing. On October 23 2008, I sent a follow-up email noting that “I pointed out a transparent example of plagiarism in your journal, and no one from the editorial board has contacted me about an investigation”.

This time I got a response from Luc Wuytack, Principal Editor Journal CAM. He said “Considering the fact that your paper was referenced several times in Chen's paper, there was no need to further investigate your claim.”

To say I was dumbfound would be an understatement. I tried to go over the heads of the EB by emailing the publisher. At first this seemed to work, Lucia Franco did respond on 11/10/2008, and say “let me assure you that we take allegations of plagiarism very seriously.”. However, since then he has not communicated with me, he has not responded to email, and the paper in question is still online.

I can understand the need for caution when the claim of plagiarism is subjective or on the borderline, however in this case the paper steals figures, ideas and text. It even manages to steal text from at least 6 different papers! See

What is my point?

The Editorial board of Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics is either incompetent or lazy or both. Perhaps they are not as bad as M. S. El Naschie [b], but they should be replaced.

Elsevier Journals are not cheap, if they expect our libraries to pay the hefty subscription fees, they should make an effort to do some quality control. I will be forwarding this communication to my library.
